In the 1960’s, most hotels were open from December to April to cater for visitors coming from Canada and the northern states of the U.S.A. to escape from their winters. Transportation for these visitors was comparatively easy with flights provided by American airlines including Pan Am from a number of U.S. airports, and with Air Canada operating from Toronto and Montreal. There were few British, and even less Europeans, travelling to the Caribbean due to limited flights operated only by very few scheduled carriers including B O A C (later to become British Airways) and B W I A (the national carrier of Trinidad). In those days there were no charter flights operating to the Caribbean. With the promotion of the Caribbean in Europe and particularly in the United Kingdom through advertising, the tourist boards, and travel exhibitions such as World Travel Market in London, and ITB in Berlin, the number of visitors to the Caribbean started to show dramatic increases particularly to Barbados, Antigua, and Jamaica, and with demand for Caribbean holidays accommodation throughout the year as holiday makers became aware that the Caribbean offered fabulous beaches and sunshine all year round. This resulted in hotels operating for 12 months of the year, and the commencement of package Caribbean holidays with charter airlines operating into Barbados, Antigua, Jamaica, St Lucia, Grenada, and St Kitts. A major impact on the number of visitors from the United Kingdom in recent years, has been due to Virgin Atlantic commencing flights to the Caribbean, and the promotion of packaged Caribbean holidays through Virgin Holidays to the travel trade and the general public. Demand has increased in recent years for Caribbean villas particularly in Antigua, St Lucia, Anguilla, the British Virgin Islands, Barbados, Grenada, Nevis, and St Kitts for tourists who wish to tailor-make their Caribbean holidays.
